Consulting in development of civic sector and strengthening philanthropy

Boris Strecansky is Program Director at the Ekopolis Foundation in Slovakia. Since 1992 he served as a coordinator of environmental management training program for local governments, NGOs, small businesses in Slovakia and since 1994 also as a project manager of several cross-sectoral partnership projects implemented with international partners (World Resources Institute). In 1997/98 he co-facilitated a broader initiative of NGOs and donors looking at concept of CFs in Slovakia (Community Philanthropy Development Initiative) and in 1998-2000 co-facilitated establishment of the Bratislava community foundation. Boris served as a trainer and consultant in Slovakia and abroad for OSI, World Bank, NDI and some other clients as a trainer in project management and project design, evaluation in program management and strategic planning. He also served on boards of several foundations and is a member of the Slovak Society for Sustainable Living. In 1989-1991 he was a volunteer in the Slovak Student Movement.

Graduated at the Faculty of Commerce, University of Economics in Bratislava (1998) and worked for an international company. In 2001 he completed his post-graduate studies in Society and Economy at the British Lancaster University at the Faculty of Sociology, Central European University in Warsaw. He stayed in the US, attended a course in Management of Non-Profit Organizations at Academia Istropolitana Nova – Education in Public Policy programme. He founded and managed several civic associations, participated in various international projects and took part in the long-term educational programme for Czech and Slovak non-profit sector consultants by PDCS. Since October 2001 has been working for association PANET as a consultant. He is an author and co-author of several studies and articles.

Presentation
The presentation will try to describe the situation and specific circumstances that create framework for contemporary non-profit sector and philanthropy development in Slovakia. It will focus on several aspects of societal and structural changes that Slovak NGOs have to face and that shape the nature of philanthropy and support from different sources. As a consequence new consulting opportunities for different clients and stakeholders will be offered for discussion.
